This Must be Just Like Living in Paradise , , ,

Today was the day I had been looking forward to all week. When I originally planned this trip, I wanted to get to a really tropical destination. Florida was as far as we could go on our budget so I started researching places that looked like the tropical image I had in my head. Through this search I discovered Fort DeSoto Park and Egmont Key. They are located at the southern end of the area we were in. Fort DeSoto boasted the Best Beach in North America and Egmont Key offered spectacular natural sights. Neither spot disappointed.

I began the day with tea and toast in bed again and watched as the sun burned off the mist and lit up the beach. Once we had all had a good breakfast we headed out the door, Nate was not yet feeling one hundred percent but he did seem better then the day before. We all happily piled in the car and set off for today's adventure. As we got closer the palms lining the highway got shorter and denser and the traffic got lighter and lighter.

We arrived at the park and walked out to the end of the pier to purchase tickets for the Ferry to go to Egmont Key. The Pier was lined with people fishing, Nate had a thousand questions about this. "Mommy, what are they doing?" "How do they catch the fish?" "What do they do with the fish?" The next ferry was coming in about 20 minutes, luckily there were tons of things to look at. There was a pelican family bobbing in the waves, a pair of ducks were diving down beneath the surface and catching fish. Then we heard the call, "right off the end of the pier, dolphins!" Sure enough there were three of them gracefully arching through the water.

As the dolphins disappeared beneath the waves we spotted the ferry coming across the bay. when it docked we boarded and waited to set sail! The ride to the key was only about fifteen minutes, on the way we spotted another pod of dolphins splashing in the surf. It was another perfect day, the sun was shinning on the perfectly calm turquoise water. Will was thrilled to be an a boat!

The captain beached the ferry and we disembarked to a piece of heaven! This key had no power, no vehicles, nothing except for the ruins of old Spanish war batteries and forts. When we first arrived, we stood on the beach and watched jelly fish bobbing in the water. The water was so clear we could see a pair of black and white fish scooting along the sandy bottom. We then headed inland to explore the hiking trails. The boys loved climbing up on the deteriorating forts and climbing through the ruins. There was a side walk that led through the middle of the key that led to the old settlement area. As we travelled the path the vegetation became lush and the palms almost over lapped at the top making a sort of tropical tunnel. The few moments where the boys weren't asking questions, making observations or complaining about the long walk we could here the rustling of lizards. A few times they scampered across the path or up a tree.

After walking for about half an hour we arrived at the still functioning light house that had been built in the late 1800s. We stopped under a grove of palm trees and had a quick snack before continuing along a path to the beach. This key is a tortoise and bird sanctuary, we heard a rustling to the side of the path, we stopped quickly and saw a tortoise having a snack, munching on a patch of vines. He froze when he noticed us but let us get close enough for Ken to take same great shots and the boys to get a really good view. When he realized that we were friendly, he went on to finishing his lunch and we continued back to the beach. For me, this was the best day of our trip, the peacefulness of the key was contagious. I soaked up every ray of sunshine. I paid attention to the feel of the fine sand under my feet and enjoyed the cool ocean water as it lapped over my feet.

Will spotted the boat heading back from it's snorkeling expedition so we headed back to the pick up stop and boarded the boat. I had really wanted to go snorkeling that day but Ken had felt that the water was too cold. The captain told us what the snorkelers had seen that day, 4 foot long barracuda and a snake. I was very grateful for Ken's foresight. That would not have been an enjoyable experience! I was envisioning beautifully coloured little fish swimming past, not giant sea monsters! Once everyone boarded the boat we headed back to the Pier. The captain had promised us that we would tour the bay in search of dolphins. As we headed out onto the bay we saw fins almost immediately, however, we were in deep water and they didn't need to come up for air very often. The captain headed for shallower water. After only a few minutes he spotted big splashes off the beach. He headed the boat toward the beach and within minutes we were in the mids of three playful dolphins! They came right up to the side of the boat. They were so close we could hear the spray erupting form their blow holes. They flipped over and swan on their backs, it was amazing. The water was so clear that we could even see them under the surface of the water. Eventually we had to drag ourselves away and head back to the shore.

With regret that the day was over, we walked back down the pier toward the car. When we got back to the condo we quickly changed and went down to the pool for one last swim. Dragging the boys out of the water one last time we headed up for an early dinner so that we could spend some time at the beach before watching the sun go down.

The boys ran and played on the beach. They dug holes, chased birds and each other. Finally, the time came where the sun sunk quickly into the ocean. The colours were spectacular, the wind picked up causing waves to crash on to the beach and just like that the sun went down on our vacation. We all headed home with heavy hearts but fantastic memories.

Ken and I had one last drink together and then turned in early for a very long next day. As we crossed the final draw bridge on our way back to the main land I was granted on last dolphin sighting. Through the early morning mist and sun beginning to sparkle on the water a dolphin crested right in my sight line. I knew that was it, our time to go home had come. Our drive home went very smoothly and we are happy to be sleeping in our own beds but we are all missing that Florida sun shine.

Until our next adventure, cheers!

Back to Busch Gardens

Thursday morning started out early and murky. Ken was determined to ride the 4 main coasters at Busch Gardens so we were on the road by 8:30 to get ahead of any lines. The day was a bit over cast and the drive into Tampa was very foggy! Getting an early start turned out to be a very good idea. We got there in time to drive straight in to the parking lot and get on a tram without any waiting! For the first time in many days I actually felt a little chilly and wished I had a sweater. Happily that feeling did not last long. The sun burned off all the clouds and fog and the day warmed up beautifully.

Today was really a day for Ken and Will. Nate and I were feeling a little under the weather and neither of really love roller coasters. After Monday, Will is a huge fan, just like his Dad. Ken immediately jumped on the first big coaster, an old fashioned wooded one. There were no lines so he was on and off in under 10 minutes. I could tell as he walked towards us that the ride had not been what he had hoped for. We headed deeper into the park. I took the boys to Sesame Street World while Ken went to ride Sheekra, the giant dive coaster. Will and Nate had a great time ridding flying hippos, water logs and playing in the huge tree house. I happily drank in the sun as I played spectator. When Ken rejoined us this time he was looking much more satisfied, he finally found his thrill!

We all continued on to the places we didn't get to on Monday. With each step it became more clear that we were not going to get a whole day out of Nate, he was not unhappy but each step was loosing steam. We rode the Congo River Rapids (Ken and Will got soaked) then Ken went to ride his third coaster of the day. The boys and I found a good spot in the sun to dry out and have a snack. When Ken rejoined us we headed for the Rhino Rally, this is a cool ride that takes you out onto the plains to see the Rhinos, zebras and other various wild life up close.

At this point it was clear that Nate was done for the day. Will and Ken took a few minutes to ride The Scorpion, this was the event Will had been waiting for all day. It seems that the cautious one is actually the biggest thrill seeker. He did not stop talking about this coaster for the rest of the day and he can't wait to be tall enough to go on them all!

We then headed for the entrance. Nate had been waiting all day to get his promised souvenir, a stuffy Tiger. He had been talking about this all day and he was thrilled when it was finally his. Will choose a Cheetah to remind him of his first roller coaster. They both clutched them tightly and we hopped on another tram back to the parking lot. On the way home they boys relived the day through their new stuffies until Nate fell asleep.

This time it was my turn to stay back and nap with Nate, we were both out cold until supper. It is hard to believe how quickly the days here are slipping through our fingers. I have loved every second of this week and watching Will and Nate play in the sun. Ken and I are relaxing, there's actually space between our ear lobes and shoulders! Tomorrow will be bitter sweet, it is a day that I planned and have been looking forward to all week but I am not excited that it is our last day before the long journey home.

Today I saw dolphins . . .

As I write today's entry, the boys are peacefully sleeping and Ken and I are sitting on the balcony watching the end of the sun set. The beach has cleared out and most of the boats seem to have docked for the night. The traffic however is picking up, lots of people have places to go apparently!

Today started off very slowly. I slept in until 9:00am! Ken had gotten up and gotten breakfast for the boys. He brought me toast and tea in bed while I watched morning television and the ocean through our window. Eventually, the boys climbed in with me and we had Boate family snuggle time. Finally, it was time to get up and get dressed. Ken was taking the boys to a baseball game. Baseball is not my favourite thing, I offered to go with them but I think Ken wanted a bit of boy bonding time and I was happy to be a lone for a few hours.

The boys headed out and I headed for the beach. I had been wanting to take a stroll along the coast since we arrived. Strolling is not really possible with two very active little boys so I enjoyed every second. There was a soft breeze to keep the temperature comfortable, the water was warm and gently lapping at the shore. I walked all the way to the pier, I then walked to the end of the Pier and stood to admire the endless blue water. Soon I heard, "there, dolphins!" I looked to my left and saw the shimmering cresting fin of a dolphin, it dove back down immediately but the water was so clear that I could see it's dark spot in the ocean. I watched it follow the coast line, I again looked to my left to see two more The three of them played in the shallow warm waters and gave all of us tourists quite a show. I eventually left the pier and followed the dolphins as I made my way back to our condo. I stopped here and there where large groups of people were excitedly pointing and gesturing. I stopped just behind one family that had waded out into the surf. Their little girl kept saying, "dolphin, dolphin, come here dolphin." I think the dolphin heard her. At one point there were maybe 3 meters between myself and the dolphin nearest the shore. Eventually, I tore myself away and headed back to John's Pass for a little shopping. The one thing I have wanted since arriving is a new bathing suit. 3 boys are generally not that patient while I try on a bunch of things so I took advantage of my opportunity. I poked around a few shops with no success. Then I came across one store with great service and interesting suits. Success, I found a suit I loved. It cost way more than I wanted to spend but when it's love it's love. To avoid spending any more money, I headed back to the condo for a quick lunch.

I was just slipping on my new suit and was about to leave a note for the boys when I heard the door open. In came a happy looking Will and Ken carrying a very sleepy Nate. We tucked Nate and Ken into bed while Will and I headed for the beach. Will happily played and sang in the sand and surf. Will and Nate do get along remarkably well but I think Will was happy for a little time alone. After a couple of hours we headed back as Will had decided that it was time for the pool. Ken and Nate slept on so we quietly snuck back out and to the pool. Will quickly met a new friend who happens to be from Orillia! I watched them play and chatted with the boy's Grandfather about the highlights of Madeira beach and what brought him here. After an hour, we headed back upstairs to figure out what we were going to do for dinner.

Nate finally woke up but we were all feeling a bit lazy so we decided to eat out tonight. We found a great little sea food grill with a cool aquarium for the boys to watch. We had a great meal together . Despite Nate's marathon nap he was still exhausted. We quickly put the boys to bed and now here we are. Ken and I will be heading to bed shortly as tomorrow is another day at Busch Gardens. Look out coasters, Ken is coming for you!

The Highseas Expedition

Today started out being our crash day. I was exhausted as were Will and Nate. They were grouchy and whinny, however, we had a plan. Today we were going on a Pirate Ship!

We started out the day by driving around and exploring the other end of the island. Turns out we are in the heart of the action! We did find a little park right on the edge of the ocean. The boys had a great time just running and playing. Nate was not thrilled when it was time to go but there was the promise of exciting things to come!

We headed to John's Pass to buy tickets for our Pirate Expedition. This trip promised dolphin watching, Water gun battles, Pirate tales and for the the grown ups free wine and beer! We were all excited about what the day had in store for us.

We then headed to the upper patio of Bubba Gump Shrimp for lunch. It was the best way to eat lunch on a Tuesday I could imagine. We were looking out at the soft blue ocean, the boys could watch the draw bridge go up and down, there was something for everyone! About 40 mins before our departure time we saw the Pirate ship coming back into the harbour. The draw bridge opened to allow for it's tall masts, Will was pressed up to the deck railing so he could get the best view possible. After that he was ready to go. We went for a walk on the beach to pass the time. Will loved finding shells and Nate was stalking a large crane that was watching us play. Finally, it was time to head to the dock. There were a number of other families waiting to board. We checked in, Will and Nate got their pirate hats and a water gun each. They were in heaven. We never let them play with guns so this was a big deal for them. We boarded the ship and the free drinks began flowing immediately. Ken was determined to get his moneys worth of free beer. By the end of the cruise he had accomplished his goal!

I kept thinking as I watched the boys listen to Pirate Tales, and play and dance with the other kids that this is a day they will always remember. The ocean was calm and perfect, there was not a cloud in the sky and they were living out their best Pirate fantasy! Ken even got in on the fun. The crew pulled him aside, dressed him up as the Pirate Peg-leg Pete and sent him up to scare the kids. Will took one look at him and said, "Your not a Pirate, your my Dad!" As adults we had a great time too. We got some alone time, the pirate crew kept the kids entertained. We met some fun and interesting people and got a tour of this very interesting place we are in. The ocean and the land here are so intertwined it's hard to know where one ends and the other begins. There are inlets and bays snaking in and out of the island continuously. Ken was the only one of us to see a dolphin (the one thing I was really looking forward to!) He said it was amazing. I did briefly see one as we were disembarking the ship. When our cruise was over we headed back to the condo for fa dip in the pool as we were all feeling hot and a bit tired.

The swim energized us all and we again had to drag the boys out of the water. We gave them a quick dinner and then headed to the beach to watch the sun set. This was the moment of the trip I have been waiting for. The sun slowly sank toward the horizon, the sky becoming more intense shades of orange and red. I watched the boys as they played in the tide pools, finding treasures. They worked together to try to rebuild a sand castle that the waves kept crashing over. The ocean was warm, the sand was cooling and the air was filled with the scent of ocean and flowers. I can't think of any better way to spend an evening.

When the sun was gone we pulled the boys away from their building with promises of returning tomorrow. The boys went right to bed and Ken and I had a lovely, relaxed grown up meal. I can't believe tomorrow is Wednesday already. I wish March Break was two weeks!

The Boate's take on Busch Gardens

As I write this entry the sun is sinking into a wall of clouds turning them various shades of pink, orange and yellow. It's a beautiful end to a lovely day and we are all exhausted. The boys are already sound asleep. Today, the Boate Team had a great time at Busch Gardens!

For 3 members of the Boate Team today was a first. Ken had travelled here with his family and he was eager to share this experience with his boys. It was a perfectly warm, sunny day with just enough breeze to keep the temperature very comfortable. At one point, Will actually said, "I'm hot!" I reminded him that there would be no complaining about that because only a few days ago we were freezing in a snow storm! Our adventure began with a tram to the park. Everything is exciting through the eyes of a 4 and 6 year old. Stepping into the park was like entering into a fantasy land. Suddenly nothing looked like reality. The entry village had a Moroccan theme with brightly coloured buildings and tiles every where. I have to say that these days are always a bit bitter sweet. The environmentalist in me can't really come to terms with the needless energy consumption and the massive garbage production. I was also feeling guilty today because the $300.00 charge to get into the park I'm sure would have been better directed to Japan, we'll make a donation when we get home.

The first stop on our adventure was the Australian walk about. The Kangaroos were so close to the path that you could feed and pet them. We walked a little further saw some beautifully coloured birds and then came across a field of Flamingos. After living in a Grey scale world for the last few months, the bright infusion of colour was even more inspirational then usual!

Ken was determined that he and the boys would be riding roller coasters today. One of our first stops was the Grover coaster, one I could actually manage to ride. The looks on the boys faces were priceless Nate rode with me and giggled the entire time. He was also very excited to meet Big Bird and Elmo. We sometimes forget that Will is two years older, they get along so well but he had no interest is meeting and getting his picture taken with the characters. Nate on the other hand had quite and experience with Elmo and he came out grinning from ear to ear.

The next major event was boarding the Train which circles the park. It is a real, functioning steam train and this was a big deal to Mr. Will. When we had boarded and were waiting for the train to leave the station he was practically vibrating! We saw many sights of the park. The best part of the day for me was seeing the giraffes, zebras and rhinos wandering the simulated African plains. Giraffes are always captivating, their long graceful strides and beautifully patterned bodies, they get me every time.

We arrived at the Nairobi station had a quick lunch and then headed to the Tiger trail. Nate had been looking forward to this all day. The display itself is pretty neat. The tigers were lying languidly enjoying an afternoon siesta. There is one display area that is under the tigers. You climb up into a small observation bubble and there was a white Bengal tiger lying right on top of it. Nate and I peeked at it from the ground as Nate was a little nervous. Will on the other hand climbed confidently up the ladder and took in the closeness of the tiger.

We then headed to another section of the park where Will and Ken rode another roller coaster, a real one this time. I was anticipating that he would be a little shaken but I was wrong, he loved every second and couldn't wait to get on the next one. Luckily, we were able to reach a compromise. As Nate was not tall enough to to on the Cheetah chase, Will agreed to let him go on the Scorpion with Daddy and he went with me on a very fun spiny ride. We both laughed and giggled throughout the entire ride, We then headed back to the coaster in time to see Ken and Nate taking in on. This one was pretty serious. It had loops and everything. I didn't think that Nate would actually make it but he did, without even a single tear. Although he did say he didn't want to ride it again.

The sun was getting lower in the sky and Nate was getting slower and slower with every step. Both of these were signs that it was time to wrap the day up. Will has many plans for Thursday when we return, he can't wait for his turn on the scorpion!

Will napped on the way home and was ready to splash in the pool to cool down. Then it was time for dinner on the deck as the sun finished it's final descent into the ocean. So ends another day of our get away. Tomorrow holds more adventures on the surf!

Sunshine, daydreams!

Despite springing forward we all had a fantastic sleep! We woke up to two giggeling boys, perfect sunshine and the sparkeling ocean out our window. What could be better? Colour has returned to our lives and it is such a sight for sore eyes.

We had breakfast and tea on the balcony watching as the sun drew everyone out and on to the beach. In many ways this town reminds me of Grand Bend and the ocean could be Lake Huron on a perfect summer day. The difference is the swaying palms, telling us we are some where tropical. After Nate finnished his fouth piece of toast, I couldn't wait any more. We headed to the beach. It was still early and the air hadn't quite yet been warmed by the sun so we just went to walk and explore. The beach was as beautiful as the pictures, perfect soft, white sand and turquoise water. We dipped our toes in but the water was a bit chilly. We waded along the shore finding shells, giant oysters and bits of coral. After strolling for a while we headed over to John's Pass, an outdoor shopping area, where we found beach towels and toys. We made a quick trip back to the condo to change and then we headed to the beach for real. Will and Nate loved every second of splashing in the surf. When they finally got cold, Ken and I found a beach cabana and watched while the boys made "potion", a mix of sea water, sand and shells. They put the new beach toys to excellent use, digging, mixing and moulding! This was the day I was craving, sun, sand, watching the boys run and play, it was perfection! After a few hours we realized the drive had had a few lasting effects. Namely, two tired boys. We headed back to the condo for lunch and a nap. After Boate family nap time, we headed back to John's pass. There are lots of shops but also a very active board walk along the ocean's coast. After walking and exploring for a while the boys were ready to head back to the pool. I really think we could do nothing but go to the pool all day, every day and we would have two very happy boys on our hands!

When we were finally able to drag the boys out of the water we made a quick dinner and ate on the balcony as the sun went down. While we were eating, Nate announced that he and Sam (Sampson) granola were going to live in Florida and we could come and visit for five days. After some negotaiating he agreed to 60 days. There is no doubt about the fact that these two boys and summer lovers. I asked Nate if he would miss the snow even a little, with out even a hint of hesistation he said,"No"! Ken and I are now enjoysing an after dinner drink, the boys are passed out and we are anticipating tomorrow's adventure. Look out Busch Gardens, here we come!!

The Long and Winding Road . .

Well, Winter was not going to give us up without a fight. The closer we got to the American Boarder the more it started to snow. We decided to cross at the Rainbow bridge, thinking that would be the least congested spot. Thanks to modern technology, there is now an app you can down load to tell you what the wait times are at the bridges. We had no problems crossing, the boys were excited we were in the United States. Nate immediatly asked, "how long until Florida?" Our response was, "a long way Nate, a long way." We headed for Buffalo, the longer we were on teh highway, the more it started to snow. The boys thankfully were occupied in the back seat and we were able to drive for about an hour before stopping for dinner. Sadly, the snow continued.

We finally stopped for a quick bite to eat where we watched the snow continue to fall. After supper, the boys watched a movie and then fell asleep for the night. I too drifted off at about 10:00pm. Luckily, I am married to a driving machine, I really don't know how he does it but he was able to comfortably drive all night while the rest of up slept. We woke up at about 6:30, we were just passed the boarder to South Carolina. We stopped for breakfast where Will had a stack of baby pancakes and Nate had a make a face pancake. They provided strawberries for eyes, bannans for a mouth and yogurt to draw on some hair. He thought that breakfast was the best thing ever! We returned to the car with me at ther wheel. Ken napped for an hour and was refreshed and ready to go again (I told you, he's a machine). I insisted he continue to rest, so I drove for another 2 hours. We stopped for gas shortly before the Georgia border. The temperature was still only about 12 degrees but the sun felt so good. Will and Nate changed into T-shirts and sandals and we were off again.

After 24 striaght hours in the car we arrived. It never ceases to amaze me how fantastic Will and Nate are in the car. Yes, they were going a little stir crazy at the very end but who could blame them. Ken and I were too!

It was all worth it. We checked in to our condo, 2 bed rooms, great kitchen and a view of the Gulf, we could not ask for more. After quickly unpacking Will and Nate could no longer be contained, we had to get to the pool. Ken headed to the grocery store while the boys and I burned off some energy. They were both slightly tentative at first but after about 5 minutes Nate was swimming back and forth and Will was making huge cannon balls! I swam with them for a while, then I made my way to the hot tub where I could watch them and see the beautiful marina that is just behind the pool. We did it, we found summer and it is even better then I remebered!

We're off, again!

The Boate Team are off on another adventure!

After a long, very snowy and stormy season, we have decided to say, "forget you Winter!" Two weeks ago we decided that enough was enough and it was time for a break. It took three days to find a condo resort that met all my requirements (mostly, on the beach) and Ken's budget! We let the boys in on the secret last Friday and they have been so excited. Nate is ready to, "jump right in the pool" and Will has been anticipating, "making cannon balls in the ocean!"

As I write this kick off we are in a land of grey. We are passing the Hamilton steel mills, there's nothing but grey and brake lights as far as the eye can see. The comfort is in knowing that tomorrow we will reintroduce ourselves to colour and warmth!

I'll keep you all posted on our sunny moments. Hopefully by reading about our adventures we'll send a little Florida your way!
